Why Our History Matters

A lifeline for telephone workers. And a proud legacy.

Worcester in 1922 was a hard-working industrial city. Its factories and utility workers built things that powered a growing country: Wire, machinery, gas lines, telephone networks. But the people who did that work had few good options when it came to borrowing money and building a better life; banks were mostly only accessible to the well-off.

The credit union movement was a direct answer to that problem—an idea that working people could pool their resources, serve each other, and access fair credit without being exploited. Massachusetts had passed the first credit union law in the country just 13 years earlier. When telephone workers in Worcester organized the Central Massachusetts Telephone Workers’ Credit Union in 1922, they were part of something larger: A movement built on the belief that financial dignity wasn’t a privilege reserved for the wealthy.

Over 100 years later, AllCom Credit Union is still serving this community with expertise, compassion and conviction. Here’s to another 100 years.
