Traditional or Roth IRA? We’ll Break It Down.

The difference between a Traditional and Roth IRA comes down to when you pay taxes on your money…

Frequently Asked Questions

These great questions never get old.

Three types: Traditional IRA, Roth IRA, and Educational IRA (also called a Coverdell ESA, for education savings). Within each, you can hold a Share IRA (a liquid savings account) or an IRA Certificate (a fixed-rate certificate inside the IRA). No monthly fees, no minimum balance on the IRA Share account.
It mostly comes down to when you want to pay taxes. With a Traditional IRA, your contributions may be tax-deductible now, and you pay taxes when you withdraw in retirement. With a Roth, you pay taxes on contributions now, but qualified withdrawals in retirement—including all the growth—come out tax-free. If you expect your tax rate to be lower in retirement, Traditional often makes sense. If you expect it to be the same or higher, Roth usually wins. We recommend talking to a tax professional for advice specific to your situation, and we’re happy to walk you through the AllCom options.
The IRS sets contribution limits, and they can change year to year. As of 2024, the limit is $7,000 per year ($8,000 if you’re 50 or older). Check with a tax professional or irs.gov for the current limits before contributing.
For a Traditional IRA, almost anyone with earned income can contribute, though the tax-deductibility of your contributions depends on your income and whether you have an employer retirement plan. For a Roth IRA, there are income limits that reduce or eliminate eligibility for higher earners. This is worth a quick conversation with a tax professional, and we’re glad to help you figure out which account to open once you know where you land.
Yes! A 401K or an existing IRA can be rolled over into a new IRA at AllCom; give us a call to learn how to start and go over what documentation you will need.
AllCom IRA accounts are deposit-based. You can hold an IRA Share Account (which earns dividends like a savings account) or an IRA Certificate (which locks in a fixed rate for a set term). These are guaranteed, insured accounts, not market-based investments. If you’re looking for stock market or mutual fund exposure inside an IRA, that’s outside what AllCom offers directly, you’d want to talk with a financial advisor.
Generally at age 59½. Before that, early withdrawals typically come with a 10% federal penalty and taxes (with some exceptions). Required minimum distributions kick in at age 73 for Traditional IRAs. Roth IRAs don’t require distributions during your lifetime, which is one of their advantages. Tax rules are specific to your situation; we’d recommend verifying with a tax professional.
Early withdrawals (before age 59½) from a Traditional IRA are generally subject to income taxes plus a 10% penalty. Roth IRA withdrawals are a little more nuanced; you can withdraw your contributions (not the earnings) at any time without penalty.
Yes. IRA deposits at AllCom are insured in full through NCUA federal insurance and MSIC (Massachusetts Credit Union Share Insurance Corporation). Your retirement savings are protected.
